Depression and inflammation

A decade ago, the suggestion that certain types of depression are caused by inflammatory activity in the brain would have been laughed at (a bit like the suggestion – prior to the discovery of a certain bacterium’s effect on gastric ulcers – that ulcers were not just caused by an excess of stomach acids).

It really does harken back to this general concept of health – a healthy body (and mind/brain) occurs when energy states, immune system function, and regulation of inflammation are all working well and working together. This article covers these issues in more depth.

And the above may explain why persistent exercise can help lift mood – because the right kind of exercise has a potent beneficial effect on the body’s ability to regulate its inflammatory activity.
